The phrase ‘Eating for two’ shouldn’t necessarily be chiselled in stone when it comes to a pregnancy diet. Granted, when you’re pregnant you’re tasked with feeding yourself and your unborn child. That being said, eating two cheeseburgers at lunchtime instead of one isn’t going to give you or your baby the right amount of nutrition.
It makes sense that your body is going to be under a fair amount of stress whilst you’re pregnant. After all, you’re carrying another human being inside you. But this is why your diet should be balanced enough to supply the right amount of nutrients to both you and your baby.
The Best Foods for Pregnancy
There are certain foods that are simply better than others when it comes to pregnancy diets. The goal should always be to nourish your baby and provide your own body with the right amount of energy needed to cope with the stress of pregnancy. With that in mind, the followings foods are top of the list when it comes to proper nutrition during pregnancy.
- Folic Acid
It is important to get the proper amount of folic acid right from when the foetus is forming all the way up until your baby is born. Folic acid is instrumental in the development of your baby, particularly relating to its spine. Broccoli, spinach, lentils, peas, and citrus juice all contain folic acid, but you might be better off with a folic acid supplement so that you can monitor your intake.
- Vitamin D
Vitamin D is important for developing healthy teeth and bones. It can be found in liver and fish oils, but, here again, supplements might be a good way to get a good supply of vitamin D if you’re not a fan of the aforementioned flavours.
- Iron and Calcium
Babies draw these minerals from their mothers’ blood while in utero, so it is important to monitor their levels. If low, they are easily supplemented through capsules.
- Omega Oils
Omega oils are important for your own mental health during your third trimester, and can reduce premature birth. They’re also important for the neurological development of your baby. Omega oils can be obtained from fish oils, seeds, and walnuts.
Your intake of the above vitamins and minerals should be monitored while you are pregnant, which is why supplements are preferable.
